UGC NET JRF Eligibility, Amount, Criteria and Guidelines

Junior Research Fellowship

UGC NET JRF stands for Junior Research Fellowship. This scheme is for those students who qualify the NET exam (National Eligibility Test) of UGC (University Grant Commission) and UGC-CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) combine test.

Junior Research Fellowship

The candidate will have to score more than the cut off marks for JRF to avail this scheme. The main purpose to conduct these exams is to fulfil the various assistant professor posts and to give awards to JRF holder. The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted twice a year in the month of June and December.

Objective of JRF Fellowship

The main objective of this JRF Scheme is to provide financial support to the NET-JRF qualified candidates for further advanced research and studies in M.Phil or PhD.

Tenure of Junior Research Fellowship

Tenure of JRF Scheme is two years. After two years, the research work done by students is checked by experts. If research work is found satisfactory and acceptable then additional three years are provided to the candidates under Senior Research Fellowship (SRF).

In case, If the two years research work done by students is not found satisfactory, an additional year is given to candidates for their improvement. After this additional year candidates work again rechecked by experts if work done by them is found satisfactory then tenure of JRF fellowship is increased to additional two years.

UGC NET JRF Eligibility

Candidate should be qualified in UGC-NET or the UGC-CSIR joint test to avail this fellowship. But candidate should not be more than 28 years.
Age Relaxation
  • There is age relaxation up to 5 years for OBC/SC/ST/PWD candidates.
  • Age Relaxation of 5 years also provided to Candidate having experience in the research field. (Limited period spent on research work in relevant/related Post Graduation Subjects)  

JRF fellowship Amount

Under this Scheme, UGC provides financial support to the fellows for their advanced research and studies. Here you can check all details related to Amount of money Per Month(pm) and Per Annum(pa) paid by UGC and University/Institution.

Fellowship Amount Science Humanities & S. Science
JRF (Two years) 25,000/-pm 12,000/pa 10,000/-pa
SRF (Three years) 28,000/-pm 25,000/pa 20,500/-pa
for PH Candidates

Here you can see for Science and Humanities the fixed amount of money is paid per annum under the JRF and SRF schemes. While per month amount of money under the JRF and SRF schemes are same for all students. There is also the departmental assistance of 3000 INR per annum given to the students.
House Rent
The hostel facility is provided by University/Institution under this Scheme. In hostel facility, single seated hostel rooms are provided to the candidates. In case of non-availability, HRA (House Rent Allowance) will be paid by Institution/University.
Medical Allowance
Candidate only avails medical facilities that available at Institution/University.
Procedure for Monitoring the progress of the scheme
The performance of the candidate is monitored by the respective Guide and yearly progress of fellow is submitted to UGC Office for the next payment of Junior Research Fellowship.

Cancellation of JRF fellowship

  • Unacceptable/Unsatisfactory progress in research work
  • Candidate is found to be ineligible later
  • Misconduct

Selection Criteria for JRF Fellowship

 As we know, Junior Research Fellowship awards are not given to all UGC NET exam qualified candidates. The awards are given to those candidates who had opted JRF and will score more than the cut off marks for JRF in UGC NET exam.

Selection Criteria

Step 1: Merit list of qualified candidates is prepared by Union Grant Commision.
Step 2: 15% candidates of the merit list are awarded with assistant professor post.
Step 3:  Remaining candidates who have opted JRF are awarded with the Junior Research Fellowship.  

How to Apply for UGC Fellowship

The candidates who have cleared the UGC NET and CSIR NET exam can avail the benefits of this JRF Scheme. To Apply for this Scheme, candidates have to follow these given following steps.
  1. Selection is made under the procedure of respected Institution/University so the candidate has to apply against Advertisement that is released by respected Institution/University.
  2. The candidate must have to register himself for P.hd or M.Phil to avail this scheme. The candidate has to apply before two years from the date of issuing of eligibility certificate from UGC.
After completion of these steps, joining report is sent by Institution/University to UGC. The payment has been made from with effect from the date of joining.
